The Great Brownie Debate

This is one of our longest running arguments. About a year ago, I offered The Boy a brownie. He looked at it and asked "No frosting?" Thus began the Great Brownie Debate. We started individually polling people, with the Boy accusing me of weighting the results in my favor. He just doesn't want to admit he's wrong. Or that I'm right.

Wait, you may be saying, those are the same thing! Yes, but you try explaining that to him.

(He has author privileges on this blog so I'm sure he'll have something to say about that).

So we decided to put it to the internet for a vote. If someone offered you a brownie, would you expect it to be frosted or not? The poll is over there on the right. Voting is set to close on November 30, but we may keep it open longer. If you vote, leave a comment (if you would be so kind) to let us know where you live, where you grew up, your age & gender. The Boy wants more statistical info (religious background, socio-economic factors etc.) but I don't think it's necessary.

  2. I don't frost nor do I expect frosting, however, if I BUY a brownie and it doesn't have frosting I feel cheated somehow, even though I don't like frosting on a brownie. I am female, 36, grew up in south Texas.

  3. I guess I qualify as one of those old ladies that he thinks read this blog! I am 56, live in grew up and still live in southwestern Ontario. I make brownies with and without icing but prefer without as then I can make a very nice brownie sundae!

  4. Dude. A brownie without frosting is just... not a proper brownie. Now, if you make brownies at home and offer me one before having frosted it, I might resist the urge to throw it at you and may in fact eat it quietly. But I definitely prefer to only be offered frosted brownies.

  6. I'm 46, female, in New Hampshire (born & raised, lifelong resident except for a short stint in NYC & Germany). Around here brownies don't have frosting, whether they're homemade or purchased. They do frequently have chocolate chips, however. Statistically speaking, I'm white, middle-class, Baptist church-attending, and voting for Obama.

  11. No frosting on brownies around here unless you buy them from Costco (I think). I like them just fine without. I'm a 29 year-old female from Vancouver Island, BC, Canada.

  14. I always prefer brownies without frosting because with is just too much sugar for me. But I don't really expect either one way or the other. I'm 25, female, resident of Ohio (if these political ads play one more time I'll scream!), graduate degree.

  16. frosting is for cake, no?
brownies should be nice and gooey and therefore frosting is unnecessary

  17. I'm having trouble wrapping my brain around the concept of frosting on a brownie; I don't know why. Stats: I'm a 36 yo female who currently lives in DC, though I grew up in Ohio.

  18. Brownies deserve a scoop of ice cream but I usually can't wait long enough for ice cream or frosting. (31, Female, born & raised in Edmonton AB)

  19. No frosting. Brownies are supposed to be slightly savoury. Not cloying.

  20. Frosting?? Why would you do that to an innocent brownie?

  21. Long Island, New York until I moved to Connecticut 10 yrs now (wow time flies) and I always thought Brownies were to be served without frosting, infact if it were to have something it would be sprinklied with confectioners sugar, btw, make stencils of pics and place on top and sprinkle the confectioners on it to get cool pics every time, forgot where I saw that but for halloween pumpkins with cut out faces on top of brownies were done and it came out cute.. wonder if maybe fall leaves or little turkeys for the thanksgiving dessert table would be a good idea..anyway.. No frosting. we don't need the extra calories anyway. brownies taste wonderful without the frosting too. :)

  22. Live in Iowa. Grew up in Florida. 27 & Female.

No frosting. Besides, if someone offers me a brownie? All I want to know is if there is something "wrong" with it (fell on the ground, poisoned, etc.) If someone offered me a cupcake I wouldn't say "What? No blue frosting?" Even though I prefer blue frosting. :P

  23. I have never, ever heard of brownies with frosting until right now. It seriously sounds odd. 27, female, grew up in San Francisco Bay Area.

  24. I don't expect frosting. I like them both ways. I am 57, grew up and live in Honolulu.

  25. Brownies in stores here are iced, most people who make them themselves seem to put an icing on them, so the cake-y part stays moist in the middle.

I hate frosting on brownies, and will scrape it off every time. Its just too much sugar, too crystallized, too sweet, and not chocolate-y and cake-y enough. I also prefer mine with walnuts. 7-11 sells the bite size brownies in a bag without frosting.. those are good :)

I'm 25, from the Kootenays (BC), baptist-raised but non-committed atm, and will vote conservative, but wish NDP's ideals could be actualized outside of an Utopian/Dystopian novel. Now that I've read Patti's comment though... powdered sugar would be okay. :D

Plz let me know what email I can send my mailing address to for my free brownie?

  26. No frosting. Ever. That's totally gilding the lily (i.e. unnecessary, over the top and just a little too showy).

    [San Diego. Female. 39.]

    ;)
